Northwest-Shoals Community College Launches Career Center

Northwest-Shoals Community College recently announced the launch of their brand new Career Center. This collaborative project by students, faculty and other local businesses has been a community wide effort to ensure job seekers are prepared for the workforce. The Career Center provides interview skills, resume assistance, career exploration and employment guidance.

Coordinator of Career Services Amanda Peters said, “I am passionate about helping students discover their path. As a first generation college student, I understand that everyone’s path to success is different. Our goal is to educate our students about their career options so they graduate with a plan and are prepared to take on the real world.

The Career Center also houses the Career Closet available to both students and members of the Shoals community. Visitors to the Center can find professional business attire for interviews and other professional events for free. The Closet was made possible through a partnership with Cato Fashions and the Department of Human Resources. Faculty and students also donated clothing of their own to the Career Closet.

The construction of the Career Center was a joint effort from multiple departments on Campus. The carpentry department constructed the shelving units for the Career Closet, and the maintenance team helped complete the entire renovation project.

Although the Career Center just recently launched, Career Services have been assisting students since late November. Student Katherine Clanton took advantage of the services when she needed it most.

“I had just quit a job and was so worried about making money and getting experience. I only had experience working with kids,” said Clanton. “I talked to Amanda Peters about a potential work study position at the center. After a couple of weeks, I was selected to interview for a community placement with Threadgill Primary School. This opportunity opened the door for me to connect my future career with my passion of helping children. Students need to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity at the Career Center to invest in their future career.”

The Career Center is looking forward to supporting students in their career journey. “Because Northwest-Shoals is a community college, our career services are available to both our students and the Shoals community. Please do not hesitate to use our services to assist you with building a career plan,” added Peters.

The Northwest-Shoals Career Center is located on the Shoals campus of Northwest-Shoals Community College in the Victor P. Poole Administration Building (Bldg. 100). Call 256.331.8062 or email careercenter@nwscc.edu to schedule an appointment today.
