Chamber Launches Shoals HIRE Academy for Career Tech Students

The Shoals Chamber of Commerce launches Shoals HIRE (Helping Industry Recruit Excellence) Academy in an effort to better prepare students for the workforce. This program will replace the Chamber’s Youth Leadership Shoals program but will follow a similar format while also including group industry tours and a heavier focus on soft skill development, workplace etiquette, and resume writing.
Shoals HIRE Academy students will include high school juniors from Colbert and Lauderdale counties enrolled in Career Technical Education courses. The Academy will meet monthly through the school year, participating in career-related workshops and tours of businesses while learning about various aspects of the Shoals. As the program develops, the students may have opportunities for internships with local businesses and opportunities to lead training sessions for future HIRE classes.  Shoals HIRE Academy is free for students who participate.
“We’re excited about this new direction,” says Shoals HIRE Academy Director Chelsea Kauchick. “We see this program as an answer to the skills gap in technical and industrial trade jobs. The Academy will be focused on developing young craftsmen and craftswomen into leaders in their industries, while encouraging them to use their talents at home by showing them why the Shoals is a great place to live and work.”

Each high school will nominate four current sophomores in good standing from your career tech classes to submit applications. The HIRE Academy’s selection committee will interview all nominees and select two of the four students submitted from each school to participate in the Academy. The inaugural class of 30 students will commence in Fall 2019.
