Focusing on the

Next Level of the Workforce

Labor Force Participation

Despite having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, 78,000-plus new jobs recruited to the state in the past seven years and a record number of Alabamians working, the percentage of Alabamians participating in the labor force is lower than many other states [May 2023, U.S., 62.6%, AL, 56.9%, Lauderdale, 55.7%, Colbert, 51.4%].  While we are increasing that by the tens of thousands, we have to change this statistic.

Identifying barriers that exist for those on the sidelines who want to work but cannot is critical. Maybe that is childcare. Maybe that is transportation. Maybe that is simply difficulty in shifting from a reliance on government programs to employment.

We also know, the best way to increase the labor force participation rate is by increasing the postsecondary education attainment rate. Therefore, programs are on-going to support more Alabamians getting skilled-up whether by certificates or schooling to fill the jobs that are out there.

Fortify Your Talent Pipeline!

YouScience is a science-based, skills assessment to determine students' natural abilities and guide them to educational pathways and local careers that match their God-given talents. When assessed, most students have technical skills they never knew they had! See "Case Studies" below for evidence-based research.

YouScience provides EMPLOYERS a FREE platform to get your brand in front of your local future workforce.

In addition, you can use the new (paid) feature to list specific job titles to reach students who have the specific skills you hire, helping you build and maintain a sustainable talent pipeline that is critical for an organization's future performance.

The YouScience program closes the gap that exists in many industries by nurturing the pipeline with ready-to-work candidates.

Currently in the Shoals, Florence City Schools, Muscle Shoals City Schools and Tuscumbia City Schools use YouScience, as well as Russellville City Schools.

Your Money, Your Life! / Reality Check

VOLUNTEERS  NEEDED!

Reality Check / Your Money, Your Life is a personal finance simulation that gives students a taste of what it is like to make ends meet each month. Students are tasked with budgeting based on a given monthly income related to their preferred career choice. The students move through the simulation and “purchase” various needs and wants at different volunteer-staffed stations such as housing, cars, insurance, groceries, clothing, daycare, banking, insurance etc.

Two (2) remaining opportunities are coming up to help students learn how their education is connected to their career path, which is connected to their future finances, which is connected to their future quality of life. Join this fun, educational, personal finance simulation and help our future workforce learn how to budget their money!

Your Money, Your Life is a program of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, coordinated by the Lauderdale County office.  The Shoals Chamber partners with Extension to recruit volunteers and implement the program.

Top 10 Best

Scholarship Search Platforms

It's not too early to begin the search for college scholarships!

Even if you have a good summer job, you likely won’t make enough to pay for college. You also might not have the money you need to cover your living expenses, textbooks and a dorm room.

That is why you need to look for scholarships that will cover some or all of those costs.

Scholarship programs often include funds that go unclaimed each year and offer money that you do not need to repay. As you start your career, you don’t want to worry about loans and how you will pay them when you have other bills to worry about.

Using college scholarship search platforms is the easiest way to find programs that you qualify for and learn how to get that money. We ranked the 10 best scholarship search platforms that you can use while planning for the future.  [Click below to get the list.]

Get to Know Our

Career Technical Educators

Sheffield City Schools

Assistant Superintendent &

Career and Technical Education Director

Stephanie Wieseman proudly serves as the Sheffield City Schools’ Assistant Superintendent.

"In my new role, one of the responsibilities I enjoy the most is serving as our Career and Technical Education Director.  I work very closely with Sheffield High School and the programs we offer in health science, business & marketing, and hospitality and tourism. Our CTE programs make such a difference in the lives of our students opening doors of opportunity for both college or careers right out of high school - many are employed even before they graduate. "

Stephanie spent the first 21 years of her career teaching math in Huntsville and Madison County.  For the past 10 years, she has served as a principal.  Five years ago her family moved to the Shoals when she became principal of Sheffield Junior High School and then Sheffield High School.

"One of my passions has been making sure ALL students are college and career ready.  At SJHS our focus has been on STEM.  The STEM focus at SJHS is essential to connecting academic standards to real world applications and careers.   At the high school our focus is been on ensuring that every student has at least one of the College and Career Readiness Indicators.  During the last year, we more than doubled the number of students enrolled in dual enrollment courses at NWSCC and UNA.

"Our goal in Sheffield is to be committed to excellence in everything we do so that our students will graduate with the skills to be Employed, the knowledge to Enroll and further their education, or the character required to Enlist and serve our country."

SCS Career Technical Programs on-site include:

  • Health Science
  • Business & Marketing
  • Hospitality & Tourism
